Why Innkeepers Should Go Green.

Three Reasons to Go Green

Help the Environment, Help Others

By going green you can not only help the environment, but help others in the process.  The investment you make now in a green lodging program will reduce waste and help conserve resources not only for future generations, but for those people being affected by lack of food, clean water and fresh air right now.

Make Money

AAA noted in a 2006 survey that 34% of their members looked for green lodging.  That number is on the rise.  Environmentally responsible travel is becoming an important factor in your guests decision  making process.  These guests are not only searching for green lodging opportunities, but they are fiercely loyal to those offering eco friendly stays.

Save Money

This is easy to see.  By being green you reduce costs in the areas of utilities, transportation, trash removal, labor and amenities.   Although some areas involve an initial cost, overall being green saves you money. As an example, utilizing modern compact fluorescent bulbs can reduce energy cost for lighting  50% to 75% without compromising the quality of lighting.

Here are some things to remember when going green.  Guests who take advantage of green lodging are loyal guests.    It is important that you clearly communicate what green means at your property.  Guests who prefer eco friendly lodging are usually well educated about green.  When marketing your  property under promise and over deliver.  Delight them with your ideas.   Combining the right business plan, good service  and  a green lodging program can build a base of happy eco minded guests who return again and again.
